Five signs a legacy app is ready to move to Azure

Not every system should move first. These are the signals that an application will move cleanly and pay back quickly.

Most organizations we meet run a mix of systems: some built last year, some built fifteen years ago and still doing important work. Moving all of them to the cloud at once is rarely the right plan. The better question is which application should move first. These five signs point to a good candidate.

1. It’s stable, but the server under it isn’t

If the application works and people rely on it, but the hardware or operating system is out of support, you’re carrying risk for no benefit. Rehosting it on Azure removes that risk without touching the code, and it gives your team a low-stakes first migration to learn from.

2. Demand goes up and down

Seasonal peaks, month-end runs and campaign traffic all mean buying hardware for the busiest day of the year. In the cloud, capacity follows demand. Applications with uneven load usually show the clearest cost difference.

3. It has few, well-understood dependencies

An application that talks to one database and one or two other systems is easy to move and easy to test. One that is tangled into a dozen others should wait until you’ve mapped those connections. The first wave should be the simple ones.

4. Nobody wants to touch the deployment

If releasing a new version means a long checklist and a weekend, the move is a chance to add an automated pipeline. That makes every future change cheaper, which often matters more than the hosting itself.

5. Someone will own it afterwards

A migration is not finished at cutover. The application needs monitoring, patching and a monthly look at cost. Applications with a clear owner, inside your team or under a support agreement, stay healthy after the move.

Where to start

Make a list of your applications and score each one against these five signs. The two or three with the highest scores are your first wave. If you’d like a second opinion, our free cloud assessment does this with you and puts the result in writing.
